What is a Slot?

A narrow depression, groove, notch, or slit. In a machine, it is the hole that accepts a coin or token to activate the machine’s functions.

In computing, a space on a disk or in memory that can be reserved for a particular type of object. Often, these slots are identified by their SlotType and BitmapName attributes.

The naming conventions for the slots in an xml file vary by system, but they must always match the specification in the xml schema. For example, a smb-type slot must be named smb.slot, and a smb-type bitmap slot must be named smb.slot_bitmap.

When you have more work than your capacity allows, excess slots can be borrowed by other jobs that are queued up or paused. This borrowing is limited to a small percentage of your regular capacity. Once the borrowing has been exhausted, a normal allocation of capacity to jobs will resume.

There are a number of myths that persist about slot machines, but little truth in any of them. For example, changing machines after a big jackpot will not increase your chances of winning.
